about

Robert Mitchell presents the EP entitled “Epiphany”, following up on the LP released in September 2017 “A Vigil
for Justice. A Vigil for Peace” which was Mitchell’s ninth album. “Epiphany” is his second EP. The EP features the excellent trio that built the success of “A Vigil...” Tom Mason on bass and Laurie Lowe on drums, as well as HKB Finn as narrator. This time it was also the ECM recording artist Miles Bould who produced the record and Spencer Cozens who recorded and mixed it at Steinway Recording Studios. Photography and artwork is by Carl Hyde. “Epiphany” features music played solo and in a piano trio as well as spoken word. It is a result of a very fruitful session which produced “A Vigil for Justice. A Vigil for Peace”, however the tracks included in this EP have a more contemplative character than the LP which was a vivid commentary on the current times. While with “A Vigil...” the composer addressed dissatisfaction with the political process, inequality and division, continued struggles for peace, migration, refocussing on the special talents that everyone possesses, with “Epiphany” Robert Mitchell touches on a more meditative mood, even if the pieces are upbeat. In fact, “Epiphany” is a poem, penned by Mitchell for those rare, but more direct connections to the infinite.
Here is what Robert Mitchell says about one of the tracks, “Le Theatre Des Bouffes du Nord”:
The first phrase of the melody jumped into this realm during a soundcheck at this fantastic and historic theatre in Paris. History seeping out of the walls, amazingly high ceiling, impressive and imposing seating layout and a superb piano meant this beginning was unexpected, but a pleasure to then develop. This was also less than a month after the attack at Le Bataclan ahead of what ended up being a magical show performing with the great vocalist Daymé Arocena."
